Smoking is Still a Problem in Society – But it’s a Problem That’s Being Addressed

Smoking continues to be a big problem in our society these days. It’s clear that a lot of people have taken measures to quit smoking, but there are still problems. Smoking is bad for health and costs our health services millions every year. It also fuels another major problem which is alcohol, and that can drastically amplify depression. We all need to work toward a safer and cleaner society and one that is largely smoke-free. The problem we have is that smoking is popular among youth because of its perception as being ‘cool’. And it’s also highly addictive so once people start they find it difficult to stop.

The good news is that the problem of smoking is a problem that’s being addressed. There are plenty of examples of things that can be done to help people quit. And this is so important because a recent study showed that it can take people up to 30 tries to quit smoking. This is not conducive to getting lots of people to want to put in the effort involved in quitting. So, using some of the ideas below to help people give up more easily is certainly the right course of action.

Educating People

The first and best course of action is to put more effort and resources into educating people about the risks of smoking. The more people are aware of the dangers involved, the more people will decide to opt for a healthier life. But this has to happen from a young age, and there should be plenty about it in the media on a regular basis.

Vaping

Vaping is a reasonably new trend that has taken the world by storm. And it’s great because so many people are giving up cigarettes and taking up vaping instead. This is an excellent way of getting people to transition and give up smoking entirely. That’s why it’s so important to promote vaporizers, e-juice and electronic cigarettes. There are already adverts dedicated to encouraging smokers to vape, and the vaping community looks set to increase.

Smoking Ban

One of the most effective ways of fighting smoking in our society has been through the smoking ban. Since 2007 most pubs and bars across the UK and North America have become smoke-free. There are also a lot of other public areas where smoking has been and will be prohibited. And the benefit of this is that it turns smoking into an inconvenience. This discourages people to keep up with it and makes them more likely to quit.

Higher Prices

Another avenue that can be exploited to reduce the problem of smoking is higher prices. Now, this is a course of action that has already been taken several times. And it needs to continue to happen because eventually it will become too expensive for people to smoke. This is one of the most effective ways of getting people to quit, especially with the cost of living these days.

It’s pretty clear that smoking is still a problem in our society. But, it’s also clear that steps are being taken to reduce the number of people who smoke. There has been a decline in the number of people smoking over the past ten years. And work needs to be done to reduce this figure even more.
