Czech Junior Chlapik Signs with Senators
Filip Chlapik missed out on playing at Canadian Tire Centre Wednesday night, but his chances of one day calling the building home improved greatly earlier in the day.
The Czech forward, a second-round pick of the Senators in 2015, confirmed he signed an entry-level deal with Ottawa while he was in town for his national junior team’s exhibition with Team Canada.
Clapik has turned himself into a bonafide prospect for the Senators this season, scoring 20 goals and 44 points in 26 games with the Charlottetown Islanders of the QMJHL. He didn’t play in front of Ottawa’s brass Wednesday night because he was suspended three games for crosschecking an opponent in league play.
He will play for the Czechs in the tournament however.
“The first days (this season) I wasn’t really thinking about signing, but now that I did I feel really, really good,” said Clapik, a 6-foot-1, 196-pounder. “It was pretty nice to see the GM and everyone, and what they told me.”
