Argonauts Didn’t Trade for Willy to be the Backup

WINNIPEG — As Blue Bombers fans desperately hoped for another glimpse of it over the past two-and-a-half years, Scott Milanovich was still having visions of Drew Willy, franchise quarterback.

Many have forgotten how the Willy era in Winnipeg started way back in the 2014 season opener at Investors Group Field, but the Argos head coach sure hasn’t.

How could he?

On that late June evening, Willy sliced and diced Milanovich’s defence to the tune of 308 passing yards and four touchdowns, the lone time the 29-year-old quarterback would hit those statistical TD heights in Blue and Gold.

Despite what followed — injuries and uneven play — Milanovich had a peek at what the University at Buffalo Bulls product could be.
