Le Parti vert craint que les contribuables soient forcés de financer Énergie Est

Bien que le pipeline Énergie Est de TransCanada soit encore loin d’être approuvé, le Parti vert craint que le fédéral soit tenté de financer le projet.

Sa chef, Elizabeth May, estime qu’avec le cours du pétrole actuellement très bas, le projet d’oléoduc n’est pas viable économiquement.

S’il est approuvé, le pipeline transporterait du brut de l’Alberta destiné à l’exportation jusqu’au Nouveau-Brunswick, en passant notamment par le Québec. Le projet, évalué à 15 milliards $, aurait une capacité de 1,1 million de barils par jour.

Selon son chef adjoint Daniel Green, Ottawa pourrait être interpellé pour qu’il finance ou fournisse des garanties pour le projet, et les contribuables seraient alors forcés de payer. Il n’a toutefois pas d’indication que ce soit le cas en ce moment.

Le projet en est encore à une phase très préliminaire. Au Québec, le Bureau d’audiences publiques sur l’environnement (BAPE) tient actuellement des consultations sur la question. L’Office national de l’énergie (ONÉ) a par ailleurs demandé à l’entreprise de lui soumettre des documents rédigés plus clairement sur ce projet. En janvier, le gouvernement de Justin Trudeau a accordé six mois supplémentaires à l’ONÉ pour l’étude de la proposition.
