Equipe Denis Coderre candidate apologizes for ‘sexist’ online posts
A candidate for Équipe Denis Coderre issued an apology Monday for “sexist” social media posts he wrote between 2010 and 2015.
In one of the Facebook posts, Outremont borough council candidate Jeremy Murray jokingly suggests African Americans and Latinos are criminals. In two other posts, he makes light of rape and Parkinson’s disease.
“Those kinds of comments and sexist behaviour is out of line,” Murray wrote in a statement released Monday. “They are never funny no matter what we think about them. Moreover, they can unconsciously encourage much worse behaviour and that’s exactly why they can’t be tolerated.”
The candidate — who’s running in the Claude Ryan district — said the “derogatory” comments date back to when he was a university student in his early 20s and show a “flagrant” lack of judgment and maturity.
