Des océanographes ont exploité les données GPS d’animaux se laissant dériver sur les vagues.

Les puffins cendrés sont des gros oiseaux marins «nonchalants par temps calme», mais qui se transforment en «bolide manœuvrant avec habileté au ras des vagues par vent fort», selon une description du Muséum national d’histoire naturel. Ils sont bien connus des biologistes qui suivent l’évolution de leurs colonies, notamment en Méditerranée, grâce à des petites bagues munies de GPS. Mais désormais, ces oiseaux intéressent également les océanographes.

«Au large des colonies, ils se reposent souvent sur l’eau en “radeaux”, attendant la nuit pour rejoindre les nids», note encore le Muséum. Or en se laissant ainsi dériver, ils offrent de précieuses informations aux spécialistes des courants marins.

Des résultats encourageants
